Folkway Project Mission Statement

In February 1975 the Folkway opened its doors with modest goals and high ideals. Word spread quickly of this “wonderful little coffee house in Peterborough, New Hampshire” with its especially attentive and appreciative audiences. Within just a few years the Folkway became a “must play” East Coast coffee house where the most talented folk musicians from across the US and around the world came to sing and play their songs.

Throughout 2010 the Peterborough Historical Society will invite the public to celebrate the 35th Anniversary of the opening of the Folkway with a special exhibit and a year-long series of concerts and events.

Project Mission Statement

We intend to celebrate:
  • those who founded the Folkway and the employees who made it a place the public loved to come to

  • the musicians who played on the Folkway stage. Many got their start there and some will always call the Folkway “Home”

  • the impact the Folkway had on the people and culture of the Monadnock Region and New England, still apparent today

  • the appreciative public who loved the music and the positive social values that came with it.

  • the non-profit organizations which have continued to bring folk music to the Monadnock Region since the Folkway finally closed its doors on January 1, 1996
